Chinese New Year
The most valuable event in the Chinese ancient tradition is the celebration of the Spring Festival or
Chinese New Year. The Festival lasts from the first day of the first lunar month (that corresponds to January or early February) until the 15th day of the first lunar month (Lantern Festival).
Celebrations include setting firecrackers, dragon and lion dancing, giving children money to wish good luck and, most important of all, spending the evening with the family eating together or sending New Year greetings. In this period of the year parks and streets are full of colorful events such as traditional performances and dances, fireworks and various cultural activities, all celebrated in the most extensively way. Private houses are cleaned from inside out because is believed that sweeping and washing floors will drive away all the bad luck and bringing happiness in the New Year. Doors and windows are also decorated with red paper.
